Ever since its opening in 1975, Pancakes on the Rocks has been a huge hit with both locals and tourists alike. This phenomenally popular restaurant is situated in an olden style architectural building and the interior can be described as cosy. I must warn you about the wait, we had to wait in the queue at least a good 20 minutes before being seated on the lower level of this 2 storey restaurant.
Whilst waiting for our order of a Mexican Potato Crepe ($16.95), Mexicana Crepe ($14.95), a Tabriz Crepe ($14.95), and a salad, I couldn’t help but ponder whether Pancakes on the Rocks would live up to the hype surrounding it. My stomach certainly hoped so.
The wait for our meals were fair, considering how busy the place was. My dining companion was alright with her Mexican Potato Crepe (below), which was a potato and onion pancake with mexican-style beef, sour cream, tomato salsa, and guacamole, served with a salad.
For those who are interested, the Mexicana Crepe is pretty similar to the Mexican Potato Crepe, except that the pancake is a normal one, it has spicy tomato sauce and is served on a bed of lettuce.
Maguro and myself were left in the cold, with literally cold crepes. I am not sure about her, but it was fairly alarming when I discovered that the meat in my Mexicana crepe was ice cold. After notifying a Waiter, we were pleasantly surprised that they had taken the effort to re-cook the crepes for us – especially since we were wondering why they had taken so long. In fact, Maguro had almost or had already finished her salad by the time we received our warm crepes. Well, at least mine looked a lot different to what was taken back. Hopefully the Cook didn’t spit on it in revenge. :p (Just kidding about the spitting, btw)
Like my friend who had the Mexicana Potato Crepe, I felt that my Mexicana Crepe was average. And I’m not saying that because of the distaste left in my mouth from receiving ice cold crepes. I’ve definitely had better at Perth’s Pancakes at the Carillon.
We considered having dessert at this place, but I guess we were all disappointed about the nights events. On our walk along George Street in the city, we found a Max Brenner that was open! I didn’t have any, due to my indulgent week of desserts during WYD. Plus I might get ill from too much dairy. However, my friends thoroughly enjoyed their indulgent Hot Chocolates. Someone should seriously bring it to Perth one day!
