The Tony Roma’s Steakhouse Wars
Today we bring you The Tony Roma’s Wars – Tony Roma’s Mid Valley/The Gardens versus Tony Roma’s at The Curve. This is a tough match – Tony Roma’s has knocked down many heavy KL steak house contenders including The Ship which was the champion steakhouse. Who will win this final bout and be crowned the champion steakhouse?
Tony Roma’s – First Round – The Gardens, Mid Valley
We went to Tony Roma’s under the recommendation of a friend who had recently completed her very important mission of finding out where the best steaks were in Kuala Lumpur. Although we arrived rather late in the night, the staff were immediately very friendly and led us to our really large, nice, and comfortable booths where I was immediately distracted by American sports shows that were being shown on the many flat screen TV’s placed around the restaurant.
My friends and I ordered the Carolina Tenders (RM$17.90) for starters, a Sirloin Sandwich (RM$22.90), Boneless Ribs with Mashed Potato and Tomato Pesto Salad (RM$48.90), and a New York Strip with Tomato Pesto and Baked Potato (RM$53.90). We also received a free entrée of fresh bread rolls and garlic butter.
As it was our first time at Tony Roma’s, the Waiter introduced us to the 4 main sauces that they have in a fun and original way. The sauces they have are Original, Red Hot, Carolina Honeys, and Blue Ridge Smokies. My favourites were the Carolina Honeys because of its sweet nature, and the Blue Ridge Smokies because I love smoky food flavours.
The Carolina Tenders were my favourite as I loved the sauce on the succulent chicken tenders.
FT’s Boneless Ribs dish came out next – complete with a plastic bib! We weren’t quite sure why, but we thought it was really amusing that FT was given a bib. And of course, being the good friends Esther and I are, we made her wear it. I would put the photo up on the blog, except she would totally kill me for humiliating her in public… again.

Esther really loved the combination of the steak, sweet onion, cheddar cheese and grilled tomatoes in her Sirloin Sandwich. Could it be the best steak sandwich ever? The only thing we did not like were that the shoestring fries tasted really funny.

At the end of us 3 demolishing those dishes, I remembered that they hadn’t brought out my dish. We asked the Waiter whether it was coming out and if it was not ready that we wanted to cancel the order. The Waiter came back to us saying that the Chef was in the midst of preparing it and it hadn’t come out quicker as there was some sort of problem in the kitchen.
After about 10-20 minutes, it still hadn’t come out yet and we asked again whether we could cancel the meal. The Waiter once again said the kitchen was just having a slight problem. I’m guessing they were either trying to thaw the meat or perhaps trying to kill the cow and saying halal prayers before cooking it.
10 minutes later, the Waiter came out and apologised deeply for the delay. The 3 of us tried to make a dent in the dish… but we were simply just way too full to even care. However, I would say that even with a really full stomach that the NY Steak was perfect.

The evening was really enjoyable with the warm and friendly staff and delicious food. The only thing that really dampened the night was that they ‘lied’ to us about my NY Steak being ready.
Final Score: 8/10
